As per Juan Alvarez Guerra:
"After passing the tubiganes or irrigated fields, cultivated in tiers which are planted to rice we saw on the other side big flocks of white herons.
Then we descended into the craggy hill of Despedidas, whose foot touches a rivulet and over there is seated the bridge of that name which was given, according to my research and finding, because it was the place designated by custom to bid goodbye and to send off those who would leave Tayabas. How tender the scenes must have been for the people of Tayabas bidding von voyage to those who were to leave their place! How much tears must have been absorbed by its warm sand! How many fugacious promises may have been witness to such parting!
